The Muscled Skeleton Model by American Anatomical Corporation is one of very few models on our list that is made in the USA and does not have a casual name. In addition to replicated bones, this model contains a number of imitation muscles, tendons and nerves throughout its right side. Whereas our top-rated model Sam is painted with representations of major muscles, tendons and nerves, this model has actual pieces to emulate these components.
For its exceptional representation of several body systems and its realistic movement, the Muscled Skeleton Model has earned a spot on our list of the best human skeleton models.
The second tallest in our lineup, this male model stands 72” (about 183 cm) tall and features a high level of detail. As with many other models on our list, this model indicates nerve branches and vertebral arteries. It also has a series of brightly-colored imitation tendons, muscles and nerves. The spine demonstrates Facet Syndrome, a common chronic pain condition typically associated with herniated or slipped disks in the vertebral column. Our top-rated model Sam features imitation tendons on one side, and this model additionally includes flexible bands molded and fitted to emulate muscles and nerves.
As with most models on our lineup, this one has a hinged, spring-loaded jaw. The imitation muscles and tendons allow for many flexible parts on one side, including all the major joints and the fingers of one hand. The counter-tension created by this network of stretchable parts allows for more realistic flexing of major joints than in most other models. The closest approximation to this style of movement is in our Flexible Fred model, which has a bendable spine that holds its position when posed.
As this model offers a much more complex assembly than other human skeleton models, it does not easily come apart. The only removable part is the calvarium (skull cap), allowing for a closer examination of the interior skeletal structures of the skull. The quick-release hooks require no tools to be detached.
This model doesn’t come with any accompanying guides or booklets. It is meant to complement a traditional study of the human body using lectures and textbooks. As such, this model is not designed for primary or lower-level classroom settings, but would serve well for a medical school or doctor’s office for observing the standard structure of many of the body’s systems.
The Muscled Skeleton Model is the only model on our lineup that includes imitation muscles, nerves and tendons in addition to the complete set of bones. Not only is this a good choice for learning the basics of the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems, but it also serves well for learning how these systems are interrelated and physically constructed.
Pros
This model includes actual pieces to simulate major muscles, tendons and nerve groups.
Cons
This model has very few removable parts, and includes no written materials to guide your study of the model.
The Muscled Skeleton Model is a great choice for encapsulating many of the body’s systems in one model.
